ICF defines coaching supervision as:
- Exploring the coach’s internal process through reflective practice
- Reviewing the coaching agreement and any other psychological or physical contacts, both implicit and explicit
- Uncovering blind spots
- Unpacking ethical issues
- Ensuring the coach is “fit for purpose” and offering accountability
- Looking at all aspects of the coach and client’s environment for opportunities for growth in the system
Research by the International Coaching Psychology Review identified that coaches committing to regular supervision gained:
- Increased self-awareness
- Greater confidence
- Increased objectivity
- Heightened sense of belonging
- Reduced feelings of isolation
- Increased resourcefulness
Supervision is different from mentoring
With supervision we will:
- Discuss client case studies
- Unpack ethical dilemmas
- Work on your business mindset
- Guidance & motivation for professional development (credentials, training)
- Celebrate your successes
Supervision definitions from the ICF Supervision Panel:
- “partnering in a reflective dialogue”
- “compassionate curiosity and reflection”
- “openness and vulnerability”
- “oxygen for your practice – bringing hope, confidence, peace”
- “move from Doing into Being”
- “broader awareness and multidimensional perspective”
Supervisees can use their supervision in two ways towards achieving their credentials:
- Ten supervision hours can go towards your Continued Coach Education (CCE) credentialing hours in the area of Core Competency
- Your supervisor may also be a mentor (I am both!) and can carry out your ten mentor hours required for your credentialing
Mentoring is focused on giving constructive feedback and guidance to support coaches in achieving their ICF credentials (ACC, PCC, MCC). The coach submits a session recording and the mentor provides feedback tailored to the specific credential level. Or the coach brings a client into the mentor session, and after the client has left, the mentor provides their feedback. One of the credentialing requirements is to obtain 10 mentor hours, of which at least three must be 1:1 mentoring, and seven can be group mentoring. Of course, you could make all ten hours 1:1 sessions for maximum impact! I am a coach supervisor and mentor.

I wanted to say a proper thank you for the session on Friday. It felt really well structured, to the point and very useful! I liked the summary slides at the beginning which prompted me to explore an entirely different topic than the one I had in mind and which gave me a way forwards and an ability to get closure on a previous experience with a challenging client. Many, many thanks for this. Victoria Ramsden, Executive Coach, UK
Ali is focused and laser sharp during ICF supervision sessions. This is both credit to her intellect, decades of experience in the coaching industry, as well as a sincere passion and authentic love for supporting new and practicing coaches. There is a clear pathway and process for each session, which enables you a reliable entry point to join any session, and Ali’s exquisite questions alone could stand as a class on their own. If you have been searching for an ICF coach supervisor to sharpen your coaching practice, you can dead stop with Ali; you are certain to learn as much about ICF coaching as you do yourself as a coach. bec mendoza, Certified Stone Medicine Practitioner & Certified Holistic Coach, USA
